J Steps jazz band 26th June 2021
J Steps is an exciting new venture in jazz led by saxophonist Hannah Horton. The band is for anyone who is 18 and under and identifies as female or non-binary and its main aim is to tackle the historic lack of representation of women in jazz.
J Steps will meet once a month on a Saturday afternoon as part of Saffron Centre for Young Musicians, and members may play in this band alone, or join other ensembles and classes that SCYM offers on a weekly basis. The band will play jazz standards, as well as provide coaching and support with improvisation to develop solo as well as group skills. We hope to offer masterclasses as well as trips to gigs, and performance opportunities.
Players need to be at about grade 6 in standard, and to have some ensemble playing experience already. We are looking for trumpeters in particular and welcome enquiries from all jazz instrumentalists, including rhythm section.
To enquire further, please email Kate Llewellyn on kllewellyn@cym.org.uk Our first rehearsal is this Saturday 26th June, with full commitment expected in the new academic year.
